The American Library Association (ALA) Awards the North Miami Public Library with $45,000 in COVID Emergency Relief
North Miami, FL – August 19, 2021
The City of North Miami is proud to announce that the American Library Association (ALA) has chosen the North Miami Public Library as a recipient of the ALA COVID Library Relief Funds totaling $45,000. The North Miami Public Library is among 34 nationwide grantees that have experienced substantial economic hardship due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The ALA COVID Library Relief Fund provides grants between $30,000 and $50,000 and represents a significant non-federal grant opportunity for libraries. Grants support libraries' efforts to enhance technology access, collection development, digital instruction, staffing, and outreach, while maintaining and amplifying existing services through the end of 2021.
“The COVID-19 pandemic impacted all levels of library services during the past year,” says Library Director Lucia Gonzalez. “This grant will be of great help in support of our efforts to be prepared to meet the needs of students and families as the new school year begins and children return to classrooms. These funds will allow the Library to purchase much needed books for children and teens as well as continue providing after school learning opportunities and literacy based family programming and initiatives.”
The ALA COVID Library Relief Fund is generously supported by Acton Family Giving as part of its pandemic responsive grant-making. Initial seed funding was provided by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as part of its efforts to bolster educational and cultural organizations devastated by the economic fallout from COVID-19.
