North Miami, FL – July 9th, 2025

The North Miami Police Department is actively investigating a police-involved shooting that occurred in the 400 block of NE 137th Street. Officers requested assistance and Miami Dade Sheriff’s Office deputies responded. Gunfire was exchanged by officers, a male subject was shot multiple times and transported to the hospital for medical treatment. Two North Miami officers were also injured and transported to the hospital for treatment with non-life-threatening injuries. At this time, two individuals are in custody and there is no threat to the community.

In accordance with standard protocol for officer-involved shootings, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is responding and will assume responsibility for the investigation.

Update:

One subject has been arrested. The subject is identified as Michael Mikal Harvey (DOB: 12/04/2007), he remains hospitalized in stable condition. Mr. Harvey is charged with Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Aggravated Fleeing or Eluding, and Grand Theft Auto. A firearm was recovered from the stolen vehicle. 

We want to reassure the community that there are no additional suspects at large regarding this incident and there is no threat to public safety.

North Miami Police Department and AngelSense Recognize Autism Awareness Month with Guardian Program Launch

North Miami, FL – April 8, 2025

The North Miami Police Department (NMPD), in collaboration with AngelSense, is proud to announce the launch of the Guardian Program, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at enhancing the safety and well-being of individuals with autism, Alzheimer's disease, dementia and other cognitive disabilities, by utilizing advanced tracking technology.

The NMPD Guardian Program initiative will kick-off on April 8, 2025. Through this free voluntary program, NMPD will distribute wearable GPS-enabled devices, powered by AngelSense. The device allows caregivers to track the whereabouts of vulnerable loved ones in real-time, when they are discovered missing and are at risk. The device also alerts caregivers when wearers leave designated safe zones. NMPD will have access to the device’s tracking data, ensuring a rapid and coordinated response to safely locate and reunite the missing person with their loved ones.

"By joining the Guardian Program, we unite with families in a shared mission to protect and care for our most vulnerable community members,” said Chief Cherise G. Gause, of the North Miami Police Department. “I’m very excited to embark on this journey with our partners from AngelSense, that combines community policing resources and technology to protect those who need it most. We want to ensure that our community knows every neighbor is valued, every life is protected, and every reunion is a celebration of love and safety."

The North Miami Police Department is proud to announce historic reductions in crime for the year 2024, marking one of the safest periods in the city’s history. With a 13% decrease in overall crime, a remarkable 41% reduction in violent crime, and a 100% reduction in homicides, the department is setting new standards for safety and community well-being.

Key highlights from the 2024 crime statistics include:

• 100% Reduction in Homicides: The city achieved a historic milestone, as for the first time in over 48 years the police department recorded zero homicides for 2024.
• 13% Reduction in Overall Crime: A significant year-over-year decrease, signaling a sustained effort to make North Miami safer for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.
• 41% Decrease in Violent Crimes: The department’s comprehensive approach to crime prevention, including enhanced community policing and proactive law enforcement strategies, has resulted in a major decline in violent offenses.
• In 2024, North Miami recorded the third-lowest number of Part I Crimes in the City’s history since 1979.

These remarkable achievements are the result of collaborative efforts between the North Miami Police Department, local community organizations, and residents, all working together to ensure public safety. Enhanced community engagement, innovative policing strategies, and the hard work of the dedicated men and women of the North Miami Police Department have played a pivotal role in driving these outcomes.

Chief of Police Cherise Giordani Gause stated: “These historic reductions in crime reflect the dedication and hard work of our officers and support staff, the support of our community, and the tireless efforts we continue to put into making North Miami a safer place. The City of North Miami’s elected officials recognized United States Army veteran and North Miami Police Sergeant Abighail Mary, for her service to our nation and community during the City’s 2024 Memorial Day Ceremony, at North Miami’s Veterans Memorial At Griffing Park. 

Mary, who joined the North Miami Police Department (NMPD) nearly eight years ago, was presented with an appreciation plaque immediately after her keynote address. Following today’s festivities, Mary now holds the distinction of being the first female veteran keynote speaker at a City of North Miami Memorial Day Ceremony. 

The ceremony was also attended by local veteran’s groups, community members and City officials. It began with a presentation of colors led by the North Miami Police Department Honor Guard, along with the North Miami Senior High School JROTC, Girl Scout Troops #347, #357 and #14505, Boy Scout Troop #80, American Legion #67 and the American Legion #67 Auxillary Group. The Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem were led by Isabella Jules and Nelding Philippe, respectively. The ceremony also included a wreath laying at the North Miami Veteran’s Memorial, by the City’s elected officials. A 21-gun salute followed. Taps was played to conclude the event. 

“It’s very important to honor our nation’s fallen military heroes in this manner,” said Mary Estimé-Irvin, the City of North Miam’s Vice Mayor. “We know that fallen in no way means forgotten; and we are reminded of this this each day as we enjoy the freedom that we cherish as Americans.” Estimé-Irvin added, “I was also very pleased that the City recognized Sgt. Mary, who has lived in our North Miami since childhood, followed in her father’s military footsteps and now continues to serve others with great pride and selflessness with the NMPD.” 

After the ceremony, community members enjoyed light refreshments and great neighborly fellowship. The City of North Miami’s Memorial Day Ceremony is an annual event.

City of North Miami and Police Department Extend Invitation to Justice Department for C.O.P.S. Unit Organizational Assessment

The City of North Miami and the North Miami Police Department (NMPD), at the invitation of the Chief of Police, enthusiastically welcome the Justice Department's organizational assessment. This assessment, initiated through the Office of Community Oriented Policing Services' (COPS) Collaborative Reform Initiative, is scheduled to take place from this year through 2025. 

The NMPD will work with the COPS Office's Collaborative Reform Initiative Team to focus on the following areas: crime prevention and analysis, community engagement, technology, employee wellness, training and development, retention, resource analysis and strategic planning, and oversight and accountability. 

Mayor Alix Desulme, Ed.D. stated, "I applaud the police department for initiating this important step, and I am grateful that the DOJ has selected North Miami to conduct the organizational assessment and I look forward to sharing the updates with our residents. This assessment aligns with our city's dedication to fostering a safe and inclusive community where all residents feel respected and protected." 

The City of North Miami remains fully committed to supporting the assessment process and collaborating with the Justice Department to implement any recommended improvements. We are confident that this evaluation will contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and strengthen trust between law enforcement and the community.

Although we presently have a top-notch police department, constructive feedback and evaluations are essential for us to improve and better serve our community continuously. The North Miami Police Department has partnered with Project ChildSafe to launch a Public Safety initiative, aimed at promoting gun safety and protecting children and families. As part of this initiative, Project SafeChild has provided North Miami Police Department with 1000 safety kits containing gunlocks and educational brochures to be distributed. The North Miami Police Department will inform firearm owners about the benefits of applying a locking device on their firearm(s) and provide them with a Project ChildSafe safety kit.

The approaching holiday season yields time away from work and schools, and what should be a time of celebrations can quickly turn into tragedy for those quietly suffering, and little curiosity-seekers with extra time to explore their home. That is why the North Miami Police Department urges all City of North Miami households with firearms to take advantage of the opportunity to obtain a free gun lock. The hope is that recipients of the Project SafeChild safety kit, spread the word, encouraging and empowering others to help prevent accidents, especially in households where children are present.

Gun locks are easy to use and can provide extra security for firearm owners. This simple yet effective way to secure firearms, particularly semi-automatic pistols, can be obtained free while supplies last, by simply visiting the North Miami Police Department and requesting one.
