The City of North Miami is pleased to announce the appointment of Chief Cherise Gause as the new Chief of Police. Chief Gause brings a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to serving and protecting the community.
Chief Gause joins our esteemed police force with an impressive career spanning over 30 years in law enforcement. She has a proven track record of leadership, innovation, and community engagement. Chief Gause has demonstrated her dedication to public safety and the principles of community policing throughout her career, making her an ideal choice to lead the City of North Miami Police Department.
Chief Gause, who is of Haitian descent, was born in New York and raised in South Florida. She became the first police officer in her family and quickly ascended through the ranks. She has held assignments in all three divisions of the department: Field Operations, Administration, and Criminal Investigations respectively. Currently, she is the First Assistant Chief of Police for the Miami Police Department and oversees the Field Operations Division (FOD), which is the largest segment of the Police Department. The Field Operations Division is responsible for the day-to-day delivery of a wide range of police services within the City of Miami, including police response to calls for service and proactive crime prevention patrolling.
The City of North Miami is excited to have Chief Gause at the helm, as she brings with her a progressive vision for law enforcement in our city. Her commitment to transparency, accountability, and cultivating trust between law enforcement and the community aligns perfectly with our department's values.
Interim Chief Angel Rivera has been serving as Chief of Police since Chief Larry Jurgia’s retirement in March 2023. He will continue to serve as the Chief of Police until the hiring process is complete.During this period of transition, we are confident that our professional staff will continue to provide exceptional service to the residents of North Miami.
