NORTH MIAMI, FL (October 21, 2025)
Wednesday, Oct. 22, at 11 a.m., the City of North Miami and the Office of Vice Mayor Kassandra Timothe, MPA, District 2, will honor of the legacy of living legend and community activist, Gepsie M. Metellus, with a street re-designation.
The Street Naming Ceremony will rededicate NE 134th Street, from NE 9th Avenue to West Dixie Highway, as Gepsie M. Metellus Street. The entire North Miami community is invited to witness this special moment.
Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Metellus is recognized as a passionate voice and advocate for South Florida’s Haitian American community. She is Co-Founder and Executive Director of the award-winning Haitian Neighborhood Center Sant La, which is based in the heart of North Miami. Since 2001, Sant La has grown in prominence as a premiere resource center and service provider for the region’s Haitian immigrant population.
In addition to her service through Sant La, Metellus is a longstanding talk show host in the Haitian community. She is also recognized nationally as a media commentator and writer. Metellus is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for her leadership, service and humanitarianism. She actively gives back to the community through several community board memberships and volunteer organizations.
“I’ve personally witnessed the activism and impact of Gepsie Metellus here in North Miami and in my life personally as a Sant Fellow,” said Timothe. “I believe this street redesignation to be a fitting honor for a pioneer like Ms. Metellus, who has paved a way forward for so many in our local community.”
