The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for September 2023 is Detective Brian Bohne and Detective Kevin Warren. They are assigned to the Investigative Section. They are being recognized for their outstanding performance for the following incident:

On September 2nd, 2023, at approximately 5:40am, an unsuspecting victim was removing items from his vehicle around NE 131 Street and NE 10 Avenue. The victim was preparing to travel and had $7,000 in his possession. Three unknown subjects ambushed him and demanded his property and vehicle. One subject had a handgun and the other two had assault style rifles. Detective Bohne responded to the scene to continue the initial investigation. That same morning, approximately 40 minutes later, a similar robbery occurred around NE 146 Street and NE 20 Avenue. The victim in this case was walking toward the bus stop when he was also ambushed by three unknown subjects exiting a dark vehicle. Two of the subjects were armed with handguns and one with an assault style rifle. They demanded the victim’s property, cellular phone, and wallet. Detective Warren responded to the scene to continue this investigation. Neither detective had significant leads due to a couple of factors. There was no video surveillance footage available in the areas where both crimes occurred, and all the subjects were wearing ski masks to conceal their identities. Detectives Bohne and Warren also shared the facts of their cases with investigators throughout Miami-Dade and Broward County, who were experiencing similar crimes in their respective jurisdictions.

On September 5th, 2023, a neighboring agency apprehended subjects who were suspected of committing armed robberies and vehicle burglaries in their jurisdiction. Due to the similarity in the way these subjects committed their crimes, Detectives Bohne and Warren concluded they may have committed similar crimes throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Detectives Bohne and Warren seized this opportunity and partnered with the neighboring agency. Through skillful interviewing techniques, one of the subjects admitted his involvement in the robbery cases assigned to both Detectives Bohne and Warren. Detective Bohne realized the subject they were interviewing was wearing clothing that matched a suspect previously captured on video surveillance, committing a vehicle burglary, on August 27th, 2023. Using this information, they were able to obtain an additional confession for that vehicle burglary. The second of the two subjects arrested by the neighboring agency invoked his Miranda Rights, refusing to provide further statements. The detectives were advised that the subject had spoken to other detectives from another agency prior to invoking. Suspecting that the previous interview may bear valuable insights into the second subject's involvement in the robberies they were investigating, Detective Bohne pored over hours of interviews. His review of the video footage paid dividends as it was revealed that the second subject did make incriminating statements regarding Detective Bohne’s robbery case. Both subjects were charged accordingly.

On September 14th, 2023, additional subjects were apprehended. Detective Bohne interviewed one of the subjects who ultimately confessed to an attempted burglary of a marked Police vehicle on August 29th, 2023. A second subject was interviewed and admitted to participating in the attempted burglary of the marked police vehicle, and to participating in the robberies that Detectives Bohne and Warren were previously investigating.

Despite the initial lack of physical evidence, they utilized collaboration, acute observation skills, and superior interview techniques, to solve their cases and affect arrests.
