[ARCHIVED] North Miami Mayor Responds to DHS Recent Announcement on Registration Process for TPS for Haiti

January 27, 2023

After the recent announcement from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding the registration process for Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti, the City of North Mayor Miami Alix Desulme, Ed.D., was pleased about the process but urged U.S. Congress to solidify immigration reform to achieve citizenship.

“While I applaud the Biden Administration for redesignation of Haiti and extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals, I urge the U.S. Congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform that would ensure a pathway to a green card and ultimately, citizenship for TPS and DACA recipients.” North Miami Mayor Desulme said.

In December 2022, DHS announced a TPS extension for Haiti for an additional 18 months starting February 4, 2023, and ending August 3, 2024. This week, DHS announced the process for registering or re-registering for TPS under Haiti’s extension and noted that the registration process began Thursday, January 26, 2023. Under Haiti’s redesignation, only those Haitians seeking asylum in the United States who have been continuously residing in the U.S. since November 6, 2022, are eligible for TPS.
