North Miami Mayor Pens Letter to U.S. President Requesting "Meaningful Dialogue" with Haitian American Elected Officials About Haiti's Current State

March 14, 2024

In a letter sent Thursday, March 14 to United States President, Joe Biden, North Miami Mayor, Alix Desulme, Ed.D., asked for “meaningful dialogue” between the Biden Administration and Haitian American elected officials throughout Florida, to address Haiti’s unfolding political situation.

Desulme emphasized his desire for the White House to engage with Haitian American elected leaders in the Miami area, as the City of North Miami is home to the largest population of Haitian Americans in the U.S. A large percentage of North Miami’s resident base maintains close ties to the island nation.

The letter written by Desulme, who is of Haitian descent, asks the Biden Administration for strategic support rooted in “compassion for humanity” to address Haiti’s challenged infrastructure, on-going gang violence, civil unrest and need for responsive policy development in the interests of both nations.

Desulme’s full letter is available for online viewing. For more information, please contact the City of North Miami’s Office of the Mayor and Council at 305-895-9815.
