Detective Dwight Smith and Detective Brian Bohne
The North Miami Police Department’s “Officer of the Month” for February 2025 are Detective Dwight Smith and Detective Brian Bohne. They are currently assigned to the Investigative Section. They are being recognized for their outstanding performance while investigating the following incident:
On Tuesday, January 28th, 2025, Detective Smith responded to a call involving a female victim who had returned home after a night out. Upon arriving at her apartment, she was confronted by her husband. The subject was enraged, aggressively questioning the victim about her whereabouts. He forcefully grabbed her arm, causing her to drop her phone, effectively preventing her from calling for help. The situation escalated, as the subject pushed the victim into her apartment, held a knife to her neck, and then choked her. He further terrorized the victim by threatening to kill her before brutally assaulting and raping her. The victim managed to activate her panic alarm, alerting law enforcement. The subject immediately fled the scene in the victim’s car, leaving her physically injured and traumatized.
North Miami Police patrol units responded to the panic alarm call where they contacted the victim, who reported the attack. Multiple officers attempted to locate the subject but were unsuccessful. Later that day, after officers had cleared the scene, the subject brazenly returned to the victim’s residence. Neighbors spotted him attempting to gain entry and promptly reported it to the police. Multiple North Miami Police units responded in an attempt to locate the suspect, but he managed to evade capture. Between January 28th and January 30th, the subject returned to the apartment complex numerous times, perpetuating the fear already instilled in the victim. North Miami Police units responded, but the subject was able to continue to evade capture.
Recognizing the imminent threat to the victim, because of the brazen behavior of the subject, Detectives Smith and Bohne took decisive action. They proactively surveilled the area, determined to locate and apprehend the subject. Upon their arrival at the complex, they observed the suspect walking through the parking lot before entering the victim’s apartment via the patio door. Realizing the immediate danger the violent subject posed to the victim, the detectives quickly entered the residence to ensure her safety. Though the suspect was not inside, Detectives Smith and Bohne continued their relentless search of the apartment complex. Their persistence and commitment to removing this violent offender from the streets of North Miami paid off when they discovered the suspect attempting to conceal himself behind a dryer in the laundry room located in the apartment complex. Demonstrating tactical precision, they successfully apprehended the subject before he could continue his violent and terror-inducing behavior.
There is no doubt that the swift, proactive, and courageous actions of Detective Smith and Detective Bohne prevented the victim from suffering further victimization. The subject was also facing court proceedings for a prior domestic violence case involving the victim, which signaled to the detectives that his violence was escalating to a point where the victim’s life could very well be in jeopardy. Detective Smith and Detective Bohme’s commitment to justice and public safety is a testament to the highest law enforcement standards.
