Cigarette Litter Prevention

Welcome to North Miami's Cigarette Litter Prevention Program (CLPP) initiative!

As part of our commitment to maintaining the beauty and cleanliness of our city, we are excited to offer businesses free cigarette receptacles. The CLPP, initiated by Keep America Beautiful® in 2002, is the largest and most effective effort aimed at eradicating cigarette litter from our streets, parks, and public areas.

The Problem: Cigarette Litter

Cigarette butts are the most littered item in America, constituting a staggering 20 percent of all items and a whopping 88% of litter pieces measuring 4 inches or smaller, according to the Keep America Beautiful® 2020 National Litter Study. This issue not only results in unsightly surroundings but also poses significant harm to the environment, wildlife, and public health. These tiny, toxic remnants find their way into our beloved Biscayne Bay, and other water bodies, contaminating aquatic habitats and endangering marine life. The chemicals in cigarette filters can leach into the water, harming aquatic ecosystems and polluting our precious resources.

Our Solution: CLPP Program

Our CLPP program is designed to address this pressing issue by:

  1. Providing Free Cigarette Receptacles: We offer your business cigarette receptacles at no cost. These receptacles can be strategically placed at transition points to non-smoking areas, making it easier for individuals to dispose of their cigarette butts responsibly.
  2. Encouraging Recycling: After collecting cigarette butts in these receptacles, we encourage you to separate the cigarettes from other trash and send them to TerraCycle for recycling. Terracycle provides a free shipping label to make the recycling process hassle-free which you can download here. Tip: Adding coffee grounds to shipping box helps mask cigarette smells.
  3. Art Installation: an innovative art installation was produced though a grant from the CLPP program to raise awareness and encourage responsible disposal of cigarette butts.

Visit the North Miami Scott Galvin Community Center located at 1600 NE 126 Street North Miami, FL 33181, during the month of October 2023 to view the traveling art installation.
We understand that the maintenance of these receptacles is crucial. Therefore, we rely on business owners like you to help maintain the receptacles regularly, ensuring they remain effective in curbing cigarette litter.

To take advantage of this fantastic opportunity or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to the Sustainability Division of the Community Planning and Development department. Thank you for considering this initiative, and we look forward to working together to make North Miami a cleaner, more beautiful place for everyone to enjoy. Together, we can keep North Miami beautiful and set an example for responsible cigarette butt disposal.
