North Miami Becomes First Florida Municipality to Give Thousands of Residents Free Tablets with Internet, Mayor Launches the Initiative in Celebrating City’s 97 Birthday at Monday’s Press Conference

February 3, 2023

As North Miami celebrates 97 years as a city on February 5, 2023, North Miami Mayor Alix Desulme joined by the 5000 Role Models of Excellence and Miami-Dade County Public Schools Board Member Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall to announce a new initiative called NoMi City Smart at a press conference on Monday, February 6, 2023, 10:00 A.M., MOCA Plaza, 770 NE 125 ST, North Miami, FL 33161. The initiative includes a program that will provide up to 20K free tablets plus internet service to qualifying North Miami residents thanks to a partnership with Moolah Wireless, a provider of the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).

“We are excited about the city’s partnership with Moolah Wireless and its shared commitment to helping underserved communities bridge the digital divide.” North Miami Mayor Alix Desulme said. “As the first municipality in Florida to offer such a program, these free tablets with an internet connection will allow North Miami residents of most need to access online resources including city services.”

Eligible North Miami residents include anyone receiving food stamps, Medicare/ Medicaid, a Pell Grant for college, free lunch in K-12 schools, Social Security, Section 8, Veteran pension, or any family under the national poverty guidelines (maximum household income of $9,440 times the number of people in the household). To determine eligibility and to register for a free tablet, residents can visit www.NorthMiamiFL.gov/Tablet.
