NoMi Golden Silver Senior Program

According to the World Health Organization, between 2015 and 2050, seniors living over 60 years old will nearly double from 12% to 22%. By 2020, the number of people aged 60 years and older will outnumber children younger than five years old. Florida has the largest senior population in the U.S. according to the Census.

By 2020, Florida is expected to have a population of more than 23.5 million, and people over 60 will make up at least 28% of the population.

About the Program

More and more North Miami residents are living longer; Data suggests if an individual reaches 65 years of age, the person will probably live until 85. An estimated 10% or more of North Miami’s population are over the age of 65 years old. September 30, 2015, the North Miami city council unanimously funded a senior program managed by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department. It is a big step in preparing for the transformation of an Age-Friendly city.

Program Overview

The City of North Miami’s Golden Silver Senior Program will strive to provide the best quality recreational, educational and social programs to promote healthy aging while keeping our seniors engaged in their community.

Mission of Program

The mission of the NoMi Golden Silver Senior program is to enhance the quality of lives of North Miami Seniors while promoting healthy aging.

Purpose

The purpose of the NoMi Golden Silver Senior Program is to provide a safe place to socialize and eat a hot meal in a protected setting. It is a city-wide pilot initiative created by Mayor Alix Desulme, ED.D., to focus on the needs and well-being of our seniors in the city of North Miami.

Program Components

As a pilot program, The NoMi Golden Silver Senior Program meets one day a week (Wednesdays) at a selected community center throughout the city for services and activities reflecting their experiences as it responds to their diverse needs and interests. Each week the program strives to support their independence and encourage their involvement in the center and the community at large with the following:

  • Arts and Crafts
  • Education Workshops
  • Field Trips
  • Games
  • Indoor and Outdoor Activities
  • Nutritious Meals
  • Social Services
  • Volunteer Opportunities
  • Wellness and Fitness

Resource Meeting

A quarterly resource meeting is a major component of this program. This meeting is designed to focus on a variety of resources and referrals that offer seniors registered in the program age-related concerns:

  • Abuse/Neglect; or Related Other Programs
  • Disputes; Dispute Resolution Center
  • Financial Resources; Money Management
  • Guest Speakers
  • Homelessness; Emergency Shelter Referrals
  • Housing Resources; Hud, Section 8
  • Legal Assistance Referrals; Legal Assistance Program
  • Medical Resources; Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security
  • Mental Health Counseling; Mental Health Issues

Services

Eligibility may vary with some services, but most programs are open to everyone without regard to age, race, color, nationality, origin, sex, religion, and mental or physical disability. Services and programs include an integrated array of advocacy, health, nutrition, social services and sports activities like the following:

Transportation

Transportation is crucial to the success of this program. Those who do not have transportation, arrangements will be made for eligible seniors to get to and from the center with the activity.
