City of North Miami Adopts Resolution Denouncing Termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian Nationals, Urges Federal Action

NORTH MIAMI, FL (January 30, 2026)

The City of North Miami Mayor and City Council, at a regular council meeting held Tuesday, January 27, 2026, formally adopted a resolution condemning the termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals and urging President Donald J. Trump and the United States Congress to immediately reinstate TPS protections for Haiti.

Temporary Protected Status is a humanitarian program established by Congress to protect individuals who cannot safely return to their home countries due to armed conflict, natural disasters, or other extraordinary conditions. Haiti was first designated for TPS following the devastating 2010 earthquake, with subsequent redesignations reflecting continued instability and escalating violence.

On November 28, 2025, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of Haiti’s TPS designation, effective Tuesday, February 3, 2026. This decision will strip lawful status and work authorization from an estimated 330,000 to 500,000 Haitian TPS holders nationwide. Thousands of those impacted reside in the City of North Miami.

City leaders emphasized that the federal government’s claim that Haiti no longer meets the statutory requirements for TPS contradicts evidence of worsening humanitarian conditions. Haiti continues to face record levels of violence, widespread kidnappings, the collapse of public safety, basic services, and the displacement of more than one million people. Since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in July 2021, the country has held no elections, further destabilizing governance. In June 2025, the federal government also imposed a travel ban on Haitian nationals.

“This decision puts Haitian families in danger, and it puts our community in a state of fear,” said Vice Mayor Kassandra Timothe, MPA, District 2 who sponsored the resolution. “North Miami is proud to be home to a vibrant Haitian community, and this impacts our families, workplaces, schools, and faith institutions. I want residents to know they are not alone. Please speak with an immigration attorney and make a plan. I will be hosting a live conversation with immigration lawyer Frandley Julien on Monday, February 2 at 3 p.m. on Telepam for anyone who needs support or answers.”

Through the resolution, the Mayor and City Council strongly denounce the termination of TPS for Haiti and formally urge President Donald J. Trump and the United States Congress to reinstate TPS protections for Haitian nationals residing in the United States. The resolution also directs the City Clerk to transmit certified copies to the President and Vice President of the United States, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the Senate Majority Leader, and members of Florida’s Congressional delegation.
