Statement from North Miami Mayor Alix Desulme, Ed.D., on the Incident Involving Senator Alex Padilla

Mayor Desulme - Press Releases Posted on June 13, 2025

The events surrounding California Senator Alex Padilla’s removal from Thursday’s Department of Homeland Security press conference, in Los Angeles, are deeply troubling and cannot be ignored. A sitting United States Senator was physically restrained, handcuffed, and removed, while attempting to exercise his rightful duty to question and seek accountability from federal agencies. Senator Padilla properly identified himself yet was still subjected to force that should never be used against any elected official in the course of fulfilling their responsibilities.

This is not simply about one incident. It raises serious concerns about the state of our democracy, the respect for constitutional rights, and the willingness of some to silence voices that challenge or question authority. The ability to speak freely, demand answers, and advocate for the people we serve is at the heart of our democratic system. When those principles are threatened, every American should be concerned.

As Mayor of North Miami, I stand in full support of Senator Padilla and call for full accountability from the agencies involved. Political affiliations should have no impact on the fundamental right to free speech in our nation. North Miami remains committed to defending the rights of all individuals, protecting free speech, and upholding the rule of law. As Americans, we cannot allow fear or intimidation to undermine the foundation of our democracy.

Mayor Alix Desulme, Ed.D.
