The Office of Councilwoman Carol Keys, Esq. Funds Installation of the First City of North Miami-Sponsored Electric Vehicle Charging Station

January 22, 2021

As part of the city of North Miami’s ongoing Resilient NoMi initiative, District 2 Councilwoman Carol Keys, Esq., spearheaded and funded the installation of North Miami’s first City-sponsored electric vehicle (EV) charging station. To mark the occasion, the City debuted a video PSA announcing its latest green initiative.

The new charging station is located in the heart of Downtown North Miami, on NE 124th Street and NE 7the Avenue, adjacent to the North Miami Police Department, North Miami City Hall and MOCA North Miami. Keys brought this project to life in collaboration with the Sustainability Division of City’s Community Planning and Development Department and OBE Power.

OBE Power deployed ChargePoint’s smart, Level 2 dual-port EV charging station, which simultaneously charges two cars. The station also features universal ports that can charge all EVs currently available on the market. Charging sessions are activated by downloading the ChargePoint App or the account holder’s RFID Card. Charging rates are competitively priced. Average charging sessions take approximately two hours, allowing time for EV drivers to enjoy all of the amenities of Downtown North Miami. While charging sessions are underway, EV owners receive text alerts advising them of their charging session’s completion status.

“Back in 2018 when I connected with OBE Power at North Miami’s Annual Green Awareness Fair, I knew then that making EV charging stations accessible to the North Miami community had to become a priority,” said Keys. “If as a local government body, we are encouraging green living, we must take the lead in making opportunities to do so available. That is exactly what this project accomplishes.”

Miami-based OBE Power owns, installs and manages EV charging amenities where people live, work and play. By offering electric vehicle charging as a service for municipal, multi-family, commercial, mixed-use, workplace and entertainment properties, OBE Power is helping cities reduce CO2 pollution by accelerating the transition to emission-free transportation.

Plans by the City of North Miami to install a second EV charging station nearby are underway. To learn more about additional city of North Miami and Resilient NoMi initiatives, logon to www.NorthMiamiFL.gov/sustainability.
