STATUS REPORT # 1 FROM THE CITY OF NORTH MIAMI IN PREPARATION FOR HURRICANE DORIAN

North Miami, FL – 8/30/2019

Thursday, August 28, 2019, Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for all 67 counties within the State of Florida, in response to Hurricane Dorian. The North Miami Emergency Operations Center has been activated and pre-storm preparation has commenced. The city of North Miami would like to inform the public of the following preparation for the possible arrival of Hurricane Dorian: 

  • All City events, meetings and programs are cancelled until further notice
  • On Saturday, August 31, 2019, beginning at 7:00 a.m., the North Miami Emergency Operations Center will be available for non-emergency questions and concerns by dialing 305-893-6511.
  • North Miami employees can access information specific to City operations and staff schedules by calling the Employee Information Hotline at 305-895-9804. 
  • The first FY2020 Budget Hearing to adopt a millage rate and budget on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, for the City of North Miami is being rescheduled due to Hurricane Dorian. A new (tentative/final) budget hearing will be scheduled and proper public notice will be given. 
  • The North Miami Public Library, located at 835 NE 132 Street, will close on Saturday, August 31, 2019, until further notice. 
  • All North Miami Parks and Recreation Department programs, parks, activities, and rentals have been cancelled until further notice.    
  • The Museum of Contemporary Art (located at 770 NE 125 Street) will close on Saturday, August 31, 2019, until further notice. 
  • Sand bags (maximum of 6 per resident) will be available for North Miami residents and business owners only at the North Miami Motor Pool, 1855 NE 142 Street, once a hurricane watch is issued. 
  • The North Miami Express Shuttle Bus will continue transit services throughout the weekend. Stay tune for updates. 
  • Bulk trash pickup has ended. NOTE: IT WILL NOT BE PICKED UP AND CAN BECOME DANGEROUS PROJECTILES. 
  • DO NOT TRIM TREES at this time.  Tree trimmings can become dangerous projectiles and the North Miami Code Compliance Department will not have the time or resources to schedule additional garbage or trash pick-ups throughout the City. 
  • Regular Sanitation service (Recycling only) will proceed on Saturday, August 31, 2019. 
  • All residents and business owners are to secure all loose objects indoors. 
  • Construction materials are to be secured. Sheds must be tied down. 
  • All dumpsters and port-o-lets must either be removed from the city of North Miami or securely covered and tied down. 
  • Catch basins:  Residents living near catch basins are strongly encouraged to clear them of leaves and other debris to avoid storm relates drainage challenges. 
  • Evacuation zones (if an order is issued) impacts everyone east of the F.E.C. Railroad Tracks (between NE 14 to 16 Avenues) for a category 3 or higher hurricane.
